KAFKA Sweets & Gourmandises (Macau)

I heard it through the grapevine that a new Parisian cake shop has opened up in Macau to great fanfare! Suffice to say that KAFKA is one of the most buzzed about places in 2012, and I loved it so much that I went twice during my short visit to Macau over the holidays. Pictured above is their green tea latte ($36 MOP) which I had on both of my visits!
Their orange juice ($30 MOP) is freshly squeezed. My mom complained that her caramel macchiato ($36 MOP) was lukewarm. But then again, she prefers her drinks scorching hot.
The first cake we tried was the Mont-blanc ($38 MOP).
Now, I've read in a review this KAFKA's Mont Blanc does not live up to the version from Paris's Angelina. But of course, I've never tried Angelina, so to me, this one was pretty good! I really enjoyed the chestnut purée and the cream was so light!
Our next cake was the romantically named "In the mood of Montmartre" ($38 MOP), which features hazelnut mousse enveloping a crème brûlée center.
Out of the two cakes, this one was my favourite! The hazelnut was wonderful and the overall flavour combination was really delicious! Again, as with the Mont Blanc, this cake felt very light and I just kept wanting more and more.
In addition to the cakes, we also tried their caramel honey toast ($72 MOP). This had to be the best dessert toast I've ever had! They took the care to scoop out the toast in the inside, dice it, and toast each individual piece. As a result, every piece was perfectly browned on the outside with a lovely crunch. I wasn't a huge fan of the actual caramel, but the toast itself was divine! 
I came back a second time before the end of the holidays, this time around lunch hours. We decided to start with something savoury- pasta cabonara ($65 MOP). To my surprise, it was actually pretty decent.
I couldn't resist ordering a waffle after seeing how enticing they were from my first visit! We settled on the caramel waffle ($44 MOP), but unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. I wished that the caramel was infused into the waffle itself (somehow), instead being served on the side with the ice cream. That said, I did like the honeycombe crunches a lot.
Since we enjoyed the dessert toast the first time around, we opted to try another one- this time, the green tea toast ($74 MOP). While the toast was excellent, I think I preferred the caramel accompaniment more. The green tea ice cream wasn't overly impressive.
To end of the meal, we tried another cake- "The scent of Burgandy" ($38 MOP), which combines the flavours of black currant and green apple.
When it comes to cakes and pastries, I usually go for the nutty flavours. But in this case, I found the fruity combination to be very pleasant and the green apple added just the right amount of tartness to brighten up the flavours. All in all, I really enjoyed my two experiences at KAFKA. It was nice to see a quality dessert restaurant pop up in a forest of casinos, and for me, KAFKA definitely lived up to its hype! I look forward to coming back again the next time I visit Macau.
